Evaluasi Tingkat Efisiensi Perusahaan Asuransi Umum Full-Fledged dan Unit Syariah Menggunakan Pendekatan DEA

Abstract

The Islamic insurance industry in Indonesia continues to experience significant growth. In 2022, the asset share of Islamic life insurance reached 5.6% of total life insurance assets, while Islamic general insurance accounted for 3.7% of the market share. This development is supported by the presence of 15 full-fledged Islamic insurance and reinsurance companies, along with 43 Islamic insurance and reinsurance companies operating as Sharia Business Units (Unit Usaha Syariah/UUS). This study aims to analyze the efficiency level of full-fledged Islamic general insurance companies, evaluate the efficiency of Islamic general insurance units, and compare the efficiency levels between these two groups registered with the Indonesian Sharia Insurance Association (AASI) using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method.

The study employs DEA to measure efficiency, complemented by normality testing and the Mann–Whitney U-Test to examine differences between groups. The input variables consist of total assets, total operating expenses, and total equity, while the output variables include total profit or loss and total investment income. The findings indicate that full-fledged Islamic general insurance companies have not yet achieved full efficiency, while Islamic general insurance units exhibit lower and more varied efficiency levels. Inefficiency arises from suboptimal utilization of inputs and underperformance in output generation. Furthermore, the Mann–Whitney U-Test reveals a statistically significant difference between the efficiency levels of full-fledged Islamic general insurance companies and Islamic general insurance units. Overall, the average efficiency of full-fledged companies is higher than that of Islamic general insurance units.
